#InterviewAlumni — Léa Desanges (BSB'19): “Data is the black gold of businesses”

Data Analyst at M6 Publicity

Who are you, before being a Data Analyst at M6 Publicity?

My name is Léa, I am 23 years old and I am originally from Bandol, in the Var. After a high school diploma, I started my studies with a DUT in Business Management and Administrations in Toulon. Then, I joined BSB in 2015, and ended these good years with a specialization in Data Science

And if not, what do you do for a living... professionally?

I am a Data Analyst at the M6 Group. More specifically, I work for M6 Publicity, the group's management company. My role is therefore to analyze the large amount of data that we collect on a daily basis on our users, such as their profiles, their consumption... This in order to offer them advertising in line with their affinities.

A word about your background between BSB and your current job?

After my specialization in Data Science, I looked for an end-of-studies internship as a Data Analyst and I was taken to M6 Publicity for 6 months. There was then no question of this internship leading to a job... but it was different because a position opened up for me. A great opportunity!

If you had to present M6 Publicity to a child?

I shouldn't because we're not supposed to be targeting kids! But I would say that thanks to M6 Publicity and thanks to my work, his parents would be more likely to buy the latest product from JouéClub...

A striking anecdote to tell?

The M6 Group site is located in Neuilly-sur-Seine, and this is also where studio recordings take place. So it's fun to see Cristina Cordula in the elevator, or Stephane Rotenberg in the café!

What's the last big pride you should have celebrated more?

My degree! Health crisis obliges... we have not yet been able to have our diploma ceremony at the Zénith de Dijon, emblematic! But we look forward to it, it must be an unforgettable moment to enjoy with friends and family.

The biggest difficulty you have experienced so far with M6 Publicity?

The last few months have not been easy. First the M6 Group suffered a cyberattack last October, we were no longer able to use our professional computers for a few weeks, then the strikes in Paris in December, and finally the Covid-19 epidemic in March! So we've been working a lot from home for a few months now, this has its advantages, but in the end, office life is important I think.

A testimony to share concerning the Covid-19 episode?

My personal activity has been reduced quite a bit. I am often asked why, because media audiences did indeed increase during lockdown. But advertising is different: many advertisers, such as those in the car sector, which represents a large turnover, withdrew during this period.

What is an actor of change for you?

He is an ambitious person who takes responsibility for who he is and what he does.

Your morning routine to have the energy to change things every day?

Shower, get dressed, put on makeup, AirPods in your ears, and forget that you have 40 minutes on the subway (and try not to rush too much in transport)!

What kind of student were you?

I was very involved in the associative life of the school, I was a member of two associations, including the BDE. I loved my years in Dijon, it's my favorite city!

If you could relive your student days, what would you do differently?

Absolutely nothing! These years are unforgettable and the moments spent are memorable. I knew it when I went back to school and I told myself that I was about to have my best years. I think I was right.

What was the choice of path or the action taken when you were a student that served you the most?

I would say that my specialization in Data Science has opened a lot of doors for me. It's a highly sought-after sector, and I feel like I came into the job market at the right time. I had no trouble finding a job and got several offers. A school on a resume is great, and when you have the little extra that sets you apart from the crowd it's even better. Specialization is important.

An encounter that particularly inspired you during your time at BSB?

It was in Canada, at the University of New Brunswick, during my exchange, that I had this inspiring encounter. My marketing professor was passionate about data and it was he who pushed me to take the Data specialization in my final year. Data is the black gold of businesses, as the visual I chose evokes.

Your next big ambition?

Professionally, my career is in its early stages, I love the sector in which I work and I plan to continue to thrive there. Personally, it's about always feeling comfortable with what I do and who I am. It's not really a “big ambition” but it's essential for me.

Any advice or a message for a BSB student?

It must be VERY redundant but enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Experience everything you have to live, studies, associations, evenings, abroad if possible, so as not to regret anything. These years go by so quickly, they are short but intense. Invest, learn, school also serves to prepare us for life.
